The course will also integrate culture into language learning to enhance the understanding of cultural influence on the language. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Mandarin Chinese 3 builds upon the skills developed in Chinese 2, continuing to enrich students' learning of Chinese vocabulary and intermediate level of sentence structures. This course elevates students' understanding of more complex Chinese syntax and grammatical concepts. Students' communicative competence will be further advanced through performing longer dialogues in a variety of interactive activities in real life situations. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to communicate more in depth in those topics that they learned in Chinese 2 such as seeing doctors, weather and climate, hobbies and sports, and travel. They will have the opportunity to apply the Chinese they already learned and to acquire more advanced phrases to express themselves coherently in a series of sentences. This course also has a focus on connecting students' study of Chinese language with other disciplines. Accordingly, students' will be able to use the language skill to function in academic and career-related situations. Also, this course will continue to introduce students to explore the Chinese traditions, cultural values and history.

In this introductory course, students will learn and build upon basic language skills while being introduced to both contemporary and historical Italian culture. Students will explore the diverse and enchanting world of Italian music from the timeless classics of the past to the chart-toppers of today, and discover how Italian music has evolved, while retaining its distinct character and emotional depth. Students will learn to interpret and analyze the lyrics, themes, and emotions embedded in the music. Students will acquire an understanding of how Italian language structures, tenses, and expressions are utilized in music, while enhancing language skills in a creative and engaging way. Students will also explore the captivating evolution of Italian cinema from its inception to modern day through a curated selection of films. Students will analyze how different periods of Italian film reflect the nation's history, values, and societal changes while also exploring the landscapes, cities and culture of Italy. This course is certified by NCAA for initial-eligibility for student athletes.
PREREQUISITE This course is open to students who have an interest in learning basic Italian language skills and also to students interested in building upon existing skills while learning more about Italian culture. Prior language experience in Italian is not required. This course does not fulfill the World Language graduation requirement.

COURSE TITLE (477) AP Spanish Language and Culture

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course emphasizes speaking and writing through literary analysis. Various authors and literary genres will be explored through discussion, debate and creative writing. Research of current events will be debated in the target language. Authentic listening materials are introduced to review Spanish idioms and various accents. Students must make connections between literary works and their own lives/communities through the use of advanced vocabulary and grammar. Various forms of technology will be implemented to increase the student’s exposure to culture and social practices. Information regarding earning 3 college credits for this course will be provided in September. This course is certified by NCAA for initial-eligibility for student athletes. NOTE: This AP course has a required summer assignment. Students are expected to complete their summer assignment before the course begins and submit their work on the first full day of school in September. All students must take the Advanced Placement Test at the end of the course. A non-refundable fee of approximately $70 will be charged at the book sale for this exam.

The fourth year of French is a continuation of the first three years. The students will continue to sharpen listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through various activities. Through a wide range of topics students learn to express themselves using an ever-increasing vocabulary, present, past, future, conditional and subjunctive-tense verbs, articles, adjectives and increasingly complex grammatical structures. Students will study literature, film, art, poetry, history, current events, résumé writing, and other topics in this engaging fourth year using the latest available technology for the world language classroom.
